2021 Corporate Social Responsibility
We calculate emissions from the waste generated in Mercuria offices based on an estimate of the waste
per employee per day and emission factors published by the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and
Industrial Strategy (2020 Government greenhouse gas conversion factors for company reporting, July
2020). Like Category 1 emissions, this is small but is calculated and reported to help drive sustainability
awareness in our offices.
Category 6: Business travel (872 tCO2e)
We calculate emissions from flights based on data from our travel agents that provide routes, legs
and passenger class. Having estimated the kilometres we apply emission factors based on the class
and distance of the flight. We have applied emission factors (with radiative forcing) from the 2020
‘Government greenhouse gas conversion factors for company reporting’ published by the UK Department
for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy:
• Economy – Short-haul Flights (
3,700 km) applies an emission factor of 0.424 kgCO2e/km
We include emissions from car rentals and taxis, applying an estimate that is based on the 2020 date for
vehicle miles versus flight distances.
We have a more accurate calculation for 2021, reporting 859 tCO2e for business flights, which has
resulted in a far more reasonable estimate of emissions when compared to 2020 where we reported
around 60,000 tCO2e for flights. Our 2021 reporting is more aligned with the airline calculations of
emissions that are used by airlines when offering offsets.
Category 7: Employee commuting (346 tCO2e)
We estimate this based on a 2020 survey and conservative estimates of office attendance in 2020 and
the Covid impact started to east and staff returned to offices.
Category 9: Downstream transportation and distribution (1,716,956 tCO2e)
