2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, Volume 2 – Energy, Chapter
4 – Fugitive Emissions, Table 4.2.4G
► The gases included in calculations are those in the Kyoto basket of gases.
► For Scope 3 emissions associated with Mercuria offices we include all offices with more than 3 staff.
We include the main office consumables such as paper (Scope 3 Category 1) as well as an estimate of
emissions from waste (Scope 3 Category 5). Scope 2 emissions include office energy use.
► Scope 3 business flights (Scope 3 Category 6) are based on travel agency details of business flights.
We apply DEFRA emission factors to calculate the emissions based on the class and distance of the
flight.
► Scope 3 commuting emissions (Scope 3 Category 7) are based on survey data from 2020
► Scope 3 emissions from the transportation of commodities (Scope 3 Category 9) are based on
quantities of the commodity plus distances and routes where t-km emission factors are applied.
■ Emission factors for inland waterways, rail and trucks are taken from the Global Logistics
Emissions Council Framework for Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reporting, Version 2.0
● EU barges 20 gCO2e/tkm
● EU and N American trucks 53 gCO2e/tkm
● Asia trucks 72 gCO2e/tkm
● N American rail 40 gCO2e/tkm
■ Leakage rates for pipeline transportation are estimated by applying emission factors for
pipeline transmission
● Crude 0.000152 tCO2e/m3 crude (IPCC, 2006)
● Gas EU 0.04430 kgCO2e/m3 gas (IPCC 2006)
● Gas North America takes an average of calculations based on IPCC 2006, US Natural
Gas Star Program leak rates, GREET model and estimated US losses of 0.3% within the
transmission system
